A Weekend Trip to Houston Offers Good Food

Published by at 5:10 pm under Travels

This past weekend, we went to Houston, Texas to attend one of my friend’s wedding. Since it was our first time there, we tried to get the most of our trip short – and what we mean is, we wanted to eat good food!

On Friday night, we were trying to figure out what to eat for dinner, and after Yelping and remember a friend's request, we ended up at Goode Co Texas Bar-B-Q. It's a cafeteria-style restaurant that offers affordable BBQ.

We ordered the 3-meat combo and chose: beef brisket, bbq pork ribs, and turkey sausage. Our sides included cole slaw, rice, and jalapeno bread. To wash all this down, we also got Root Beer!

We were craving yogurt after our dinner, and after dialing Goog411 to find a Pinkberry or Golden Spoon, I realized it doesn't exist in Houston! OMG. So, we opted for Sonic and I got myself an Oreo Blast - kinda like an Oreo McFlurry from McDonalds. Verdict: I like McDonald's version better.

The next day, we wanted to kill two birds with one stone so we went to Downtown Aquarium, which offers both dining and a fun ambiance. We don't have something like this at home, so why not try something different? Dining in a room full of fishes in the tallest tank in America - interesting indeed.

I splurged a little and ordered the Redfish Rita - Sauza Gold Tequila, Grand Marnier, Sweet & Sour with a splash of cranberry juice. The best part? I got to keep the glass!

We couldn't resist ordering the lobster bisque for our appetizer. It reminded us of the lobster we had a few days earlier and how we should've kept the lobster shells to make our own lobster bisque. Whoops, too late now!

I ordered the Chicken Pasta Salad - a nice combination of mixed greens, penne pasta tossed with pesto sauce, crumbled bacon, pine nuts, tomatoes, and mixed in jalapeno ranch dressing. It was really good - something I would like to recreate in the near future!

Daniel ordered the New Orleans Po Boy. This sandwich basically has catfash topped with red onions, lettuce, and tomatoes. The sauce they used is called Remoulade sauce. Yup, it was tasty!

Overall, Houston was a nice city, but alas, we missed LA and were glad we got an earlier flight back on Sunday. I enjoyed the short trip there, and was pleasantly pleased with the food we ate. Yup, not too shabby at all.

When I lived in LA, I used to see ads for Sonic Burger ALL the time. I don’t even think there was a Sonic in LA! Did you try their burgers when you were in Houston?

Seeing this and reading about how you were in my home world of Texas, well, I am crying…I am ashamed to say that the sonic glass brought visions of cherries and limeade…the BBQ, oh the BBQ…you ought to be ashamed! It has taken me three months to get that food out of my head and back on my New Jersey diggs eating habit again…oh well, glad you had a good time, and I can think of LA kinds of food I would like to dive into!

We didn’t get a chance to try the burgers but we have a good friend that lives there so we’ll be back to try the burgers and give our feedback on them.
