If you’re wondering why we haven’t posted in the last week–and normally we post at least 2-3 times–it’s because we’ve been busy basking in the sun on the beautiful island of the Bahamas, specifically Paradise Island at Atlantis. Our first time in the Caribbean proved to be quite eventful, adventurous, and delightfully relaxing. We did everything from Atlantis’ water park to scuba diving in the middle of the ocean where we swam alongside an array of fanciful fishes. The only downside about Paradise Island is that, well, the food was expensive and unsatisfying. And coming from foodies like us, we were quite disappointed with our selection of restaurants. Of course, on some occasions, we did pay an arm and a leg to have a nice decent meal.

A fantastic view from our hotel room!

Although we are sad to leave the tropical oasis, we are definitely glad to come back to our home and kitchen so we can finally cook again, and more importantly, cook healthy meals! Upon our return from the Bahamas, we received a box of California Avocados from the great people at Foodbuzz and California Avocado Commission (thank you!!), and since they were already ripe when we opened the box, we wanted to use it to make our dinner. Instead of the usual chopped-up chunks of avocado, we decided to puree it to create a creamy sauce for the salmon, which we call our Pan Seared Salmon with Spicy Avocado Puree.

We were among the 250 bloggers that had the honor of attending the very first Foodbuzz Blogger Festival in SF this past weekend (for free!). It was the ultimate food affair – we got to eat and drink to our hearts desire for 3 straight days, all thanks to the wonderful people at Foodbuzz. Great company, delicious eats, and a suitcase full of freebies and goodies – what more could we ask for?

Later that night, we got a taste of San Francisco's Street Food Fair. Saturday was spent at City View at the Metreon where we got to taste a ton of food, get tipsy on wine and beer, see live demonstrations from our peers, and juggle bags of free swag. The eating didn't stop there! We spent Saturday night at Greenleaf Produce Warehouse for a lovely dinner and awards ceremony (congrats to those who won!). And alas, on Sunday, everyone got to say goodbye over brunch and bloody marys at Restaurant Lulu. Whew!
We have been back for a couple of weeks now and have been trying to catch up on a lot of things. We know how anxious some of you are to see what we stuffed ourselves with in Europe, right? Well, I’ve finally found a spare moment to blog about all the great eats we had while vacationing in France and Italy. From the foie gras in Paris to the homemade gnocchi in Venice, we were satisfied beyond our imaginations; and very few in between did not live up to our expectations. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience in Europe and we hope you can live vicariously through the pictures, as if you were sitting right next to us enjoying the hot plate of goodness.

The owner who was serving us only spoke French and very little English.. so he asked us beef or cheese? We said beef, and apparently we got two portions. So in order to find a decent restaurant, I turned to my Italy for Dummies book! It recommended Giggetto Al Portico D'Ottavia. I knew that I wanted to try risotto in Rome, so I ordered Risotto alla Pescatora (rice with seafood) and Daniel had Cannelloni Ripieni. Both were very tummy-satisfying! The book had suggested to order the Carciofo alla Giudia (fried artichokes jewish way) and although we ordered it, we were highly disappointed. It was basically an artichoke that was deep-fried and that was it. It was hard to eat and had little to no flavor.
Do you guys remember the famous scene from When Harry Met Sally, in which Sally did her famous “faking-it” scene? And one woman goes “I’ll have what she’s having.” Well, this was filmed at Katz Delicatessen in New York. This deli was opened in 1888 and to this day, remains a popular restaurant amongst locals, tourists (like us), politicians, and celebrities.

We had the opportunity to visit Katz during both of our visits to New York in 2007 and 2008. Daniel swears that this is by far the best pastrami he’s ever tasted, and I myself, am not a fan of pastrami, but after taking my first bite, I was convinced that pastrami is my friend. The meat is extremely moist and tender, with a hint of smokiness.

To make a long story short, we received an overnight package from our friend in New York, who sent us a whopping 4.5 lbs of pastrami as our wedding gift. Obviously, there is no way we can eat this in one sitting, as we’d be asking for a massive heart attack. So we’ve decided to eat it little by little and squirrel the rest away for a rainy day. We love Katz Deli!

To learn more about Katz Deli or to order some for yourself, visit their website: www.katzdeli.com.
