Grilled Pork Chops with A Turkey Sausage Barbecue Sauce

You can still cook a nice dinner during the weekdays without spending too much time and effort! With the weather getting warmer and the daylight stretching longer, we decided to use the barbecue grill in the backyard to grill some pork chops. The recipe we found on epicurious.com (derived in Bon Appétit’s August 2005 issue) is Grilled Pork Chops with Chunky Andouille Barbecue Sauce, but since we didn’t have Andouille sausage, we used a Smoked Turkey Sausage instead. Yes, a healthier alternative, but still flavorful and delicious. The barbecue sauce with the turkey sausage is definitely the key to this dish. You will be surprised at how quick and easy it is to make your own barbecue sauce. Daniel and I worked as a team to whip up this dinner – he was on the grill and I was in the kitchen making the sauce. Together, we did it under 30 minutes! Take that, Rachael Ray!

We seasoned 6 pork chops with salt, chili powder, and cumin. Why 6? We decided to defrost what we had left in the freezer. It's still great as leftovers!

He grilled the pork chops about 9 minutes each side until cooked through. Be careful not to overcook the meat or it will be tough.

Meanwhile, I prepared the sauce by sauteing 1 diced onion with 1 package of Smoked Turkey Sausage. Let that cook until the onions start browning, about 8 minutes.

Then, I added 2 cups of tomato sauce, 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar, 1 tbsp dark brown sugar, 2 tsp chili powder, and 1 tsp ground cumin. Bring to a boil and remove from heat. And that's it! Sauce is done.

We served the pork chops with brown rice, which we've been eating more often now. This is really a great recipe that I would make again. It's so easy and quick to make, yet its bursting with flavor. And just for giggles, I added a couple of leek flowers that we got from our garden for the photo. :)

    That is certainl. A delicious and quick meal to make on a weekday. I love home made sauces. The addition of turkey sausage would have made that sauce really good. Can I have the left overs??

    The sausage sauce looks and sounds amazing!!! It’s a little cold to grill here in Chicago, but I bet the sauce with some rice or noodles would be a great dinner even on its own.

    Jenn – At first I thought the additional sausage was a meat-overkill. But it actually goes really nicely with the sauce. To be honest, I can have the sauce as is without the pork and still be happy!

    Anne – You can sear the pork in a pan instead of grilling it outside. I’m sure it will still turn out fantastic! And remember, the sauce is the winning element of the dish.

    Eddie – We haven’t tried brining, but it’s something we plan to do when we have more time to plan out our meals. We hear about brining a lot which really helps keep the meat moist. Thanks for the suggestion!

    I haven’t tried turkey sausage in my barbecue sauce, but this recipe sounds promising I think I would like to give it a try. I love barbecue pork chops, especially when medium-rare, so I would love to discover it’s perfect mate when it comes to barbecue sauces.

    You know, I’ve never seen a leek flower before. You got me interested, and I found myself reading about leeks, which then got me reading about “Cock-a-leekie soup” which I have never eaten but have now fallen madly in love with the name :D
